The Possible Role of Vinblastine-Sensitive Suppressor T Lymphocytes in Immune Responses, Fungal Infections and Tumor Growth

Abstract
A number of publications show that microbial infections or progressive tumor growth evokes the generation of suppressor T cells and the anti-mitotic agant, vinblastine(Vb) serves to eliminte this population of suppressor cells. Thus, the present
study
was undertaken to investigate the effect of Vb administration on the humoral and cellular immune response, the resistance to infections of intracellular fungus Cryptoccous neoformans or Candida albicans and growth of tumors, such as of B16
melanoma,
Lewis lung carcinoma(3LL) and S-180 fibrosarcoma in mice. It was found that a single intravenous administration of 100¥ìg of Vb enhanced delayed-type hypersensitivity(DTH) to SRBC, contact hypersensitivity to dinitrofluorobenzene and
hemagglutinin(IgM
and IgG) response to SRBC, and that Vb administration before infection reduce the colony forming unit(CFU) of C. neoformans and C. albicans recoverd from brains, lungs, kidneys, spleen or livers when enumerated 7 days after experimental
infection,
suggesting that Bv administration may enhance the resistance of mice to the fungal infection. This study also demonstrated that a single intravenous administration of 100¥ìg Vb caused the inhibition of growth of B16 melanoma, 3LL lung carcinoma
and
S-180 fibrosarcoma. Taken togather, these studies indicated that Vb administration enhances the humoral and cellular immune response and the resisarance to infections with C. neoformans of C. albicans and that Vb administration inhabits the
growth
of
melanoma, carcinoma and fibrosarcoma by the possiby eliminating Vb-sen-sitive suppressor cells.
